It’s about being part of a spiritual family.
Being a Part of God’s Family
When we give our lives to Jesus, we are born in to God’s family, but then He expects us to become an active part of His family by connecting to a local church. Attending worship services on Sunday does not mean that we are part of a spiritual family. In order to have a spiritual family, we need to find people to intentionally go “deep” with in life; people that we can intentionally share life with the way the church in Acts 2 did.
In our church, the way that we find a spiritual family is through becoming part of a Mission Family. A Mission Family is a group of 25-30 people who are intentional about being a spiritual family to each other. In a Mission Family, we find people that help us grow closer to God as we help them grow closer to God, people to develop God honoring relationships with, and people to partner with in mission outreach together.
Mission Families meet together at least twice a month. Most of the meetings are informal and usually take place in homes. The purposes of the meetings are, fellowship, learning, prayer and developing mission strategies and skills. Smaller Discipleship Groups form within the Mission Family to learn and live out discipleship skills together. It should be noted that being part of a spiritual family involves more than going to meetings together! It is about building relationships with each other like the early church did.
On Sunday mornings, all of our Mission Families come together as one large family in order to worship God together, celebrate together and learn from our teaching pastors together. You could view this time as “Sunday Dinner at Grandma’s house!”
This model of Christians meeting in smaller groups in homes and then gathering for larger public meetings can be found all through the New Testament.
Acts 2:46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts (public meetings). They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts (home meetings).
Acts 20:20 You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house.
Another key part of the plan is to engage in a Discipleship Study. Find out more about a Discipleship Study here.
